San Antonio's first all-female professional mariachi group, Las Erendiras de San Antonio began in February 1996 as "Mariachi Erendira Xochitlan". The group formed as part of a promotion for the San Antonio Paseo del Rio Association Mariachi Festival. After the festival’s conclusion, the group continued to rehearse and in 1997 "Mariachi Femenil Las Erendiras de San Antonio" was born. The name "Erendira" is an Aztec derivative signifying "princess". The experience of these young ladies in action exemplifies the aura of their royal presence.
